Probate Registry of the Customary Court of Appeal

The Probate Registry of the Customary Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory was established in 2022. It is the designated office responsible for all matters relating to the legal rights and responsibilities connected with the administration of the estate of a deceased person.

The Registry deals with the issuance and revocation of Letters of Administration for both real and personal estates, as well as all other matters directly or indirectly related to estate administration under customary law jurisdiction.

Core Functions of the Probate Registry

Types of Grants Handled

The Registry processes the following types of grants:

• 
  Letters of Administration

  Issued when a person dies intestate (without a will) or where the will does not appoint executors. Granted to next-of-kin or entitled persons.

• 
  Grant of Probate

  Issued when the deceased left a valid will appointing executors. Confirms the executors' authority to administer the estate.

• 
  Supplementary & Re-sealing of Grants

  Handles additional grants for unadministered estate portions and re-sealing of foreign grants under applicable laws.

Important Notes

• All applications must be accompanied by required documents (death certificate, will if any, affidavit of next-of-kin, inventory, etc.)
• Caveats can be lodged to prevent issuance of grants until resolved.
• The Registry confirms and verifies all grants before issuance.
