Established under the 1999 Constitution
The Customary Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja is one of the Federal Courts established by the Constitution for the Federal Capital Territory. Section 265(1) of the 1999 Constitution provides: “There shall be a Customary Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.”
The Court is vested with both original jurisdiction (to the exclusion of every other court) in disputes relating to Chieftaincy Matters in the FCT, and appellate jurisdiction over civil proceedings involving questions of Customary Law. It also exercises supervisory jurisdiction over all Customary Courts in the FCT.
